God Continues to Reprimand Job, Then Rewards Him
Verse of the Day: “I know that You can do all things; no plan of Yours can be thwarted. . . . My ears had heard of You but now my eyes have seen You. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes.” (Job 42: 2, 5-6 NIV)

We Respond
Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Job 40-42:
1. What does this chapter tell me about God?
2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?
Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.
Job 40-42 is the concluding interaction between the LORD and Job; therefore, it will be addressed as a whole.
1. God is aware of our suffering just as He was of Job’s. God will allow Satan to harass us only to His predetermined extent. If we will trust Him, the LORD will teach us more about Himself in the process and reward us in the end.
2. If people cannot tame or control the largest of creatures like behemoth and leviathan, why do they think that they can question the LORD God who is much more powerful and who created and controls them?
Prayer:
3. How might I pray regarding Job 40-42?
O awesome and mighty LORD God, thank You for revealing this behind-the-scenes view of how Satan may be given Your permission to harass one of Your faithful servants and how You use it to increase that individual’s knowledge of and trust in You.
Throughout the previous chapters You have shown how Satan may attack a person physically, financially, mentally, emotionally, and socially. Yet, if we keep turning back to You, You will personally teach us and reward us for our faithfulness just as You did Job. LORD God, I realize now that You are aware of our suffering just as You were of Job’s. You allow Satan to harass us only to Your predetermined extent. If we will trust You, LORD, You will teach us more about Yourself in the process. People cannot tame or control the largest and most powerful of creatures like behemoth and leviathan. Why do we think that we can question You, LORD? It is You, God, who is much more powerful and who created and controls us. Holy Spirit, please help me to see through satanic deception and temptations to doubt the LORD’s goodness and justice. Teach me to see Your greatness, love, and power so that I may bring You glory, LORD. AMEN
Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)
4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Job 40-42? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:
- I will thank God for the insight the book of Job gives me into the battle between God and Satan.
- I will research behemoth and leviathan to determine if they were (or are) flesh and blood or mythical creatures and what God might want me to learn in reference to them.
- I will thank God for the way He rewarded Job after all that he had suffered at the hands of Satan.
- I will encourage a friend who is suffering with the lessons I have learned in reading the book of Job.
