Exodus 19-21

God Speaks

Preparing to Meet with the LORD God, God’s Ten Statements, Specifics in Adjudicating God’s Laws

Verse of the Day:  [The LORD told Moses to say to the Israelites,] “Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. . . .” (Exodus 19:5-6 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection.

Consider the following questions regarding Exodus 19-21

> 1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

> 2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Exodus 19

    1. It is the LORD God who created and directs mankind, not the other way around.

    2. People are to be clean, reverent and intentional as they approach God.

Exodus 20

    1. God communicates with His people how He expects them to behave toward Him and toward other people.

    2. People are often afraid to be in His presence or to interact with God.

Exodus 21

    1. Since God sees people’s hearts and inner motives, He is the One to set and execute just and fair laws.

    2. People need the just and fair laws of God to guide their behavior.

Prayer

> 3. How might I pray regarding Exodus 19-21?

O LORD God, it is You who created and directs mankind, not we ourselves or some random force. Even our consciences are insufficient. Holy Spirit help me to be clean, reverent and intentional as I approach the LORD God Almighty. God, please continue to communicate with Your people how You expect us to behave toward You and toward other people. You are so awesome we are often afraid to be in Your presence or to interact with You. God, help us to remember that You are our loving Father if we have accepted Your offer of adoption by putting our ffaith in all that Your Son Jesus has done for us. Since You, God, see people’s hearts and inner motives, you are the One to set and execute just and fair laws. We need those just and fair laws, O God, to guide our behavior. Then we will be able to bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

> 4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Exodus 19-21?  With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will do a word study in the Bible and think about what it means to meet with God, then put it into practice.
  • I will repent quickly of any ways the Holy Spirit shows me that I have broken the ten commandments.
  • I will look into how I can observe and benefit from Sabbath.
  • I will research how inidividual government officials (or candidates for such offices) at every level view the laws of God.
