Moses Continues History Lesson, Proclaims Future Scattering and Reestablishes the Covenant
Verse of the Day: [When they are scattered among the nations and begin to worship other gods, the Israelites (all followers of Yahweh) should heed these verses.] “But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. When you are in distress and all these things happen to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and obey Him. For the LORD your God is a merciful God; He will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which He confirmed to them by oath.”(Deuteronomy 4: 29-31 NIV 2011)

We Respond
Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Deuteronomy 3-4
1. What does this chapter tell me about God?
2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?
Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.
Deuteronomy 3
1. God is involved in the affairs of people here on earth especially as they affect His chosen people (Israel/Jews) or those who choose to follow Him.
2. People are free to bring their desires to God in respectful prayer.
Deuteronomy 4
1. The LORD God created and chose people, not the other way around.
2. People are best able to live and get along with each other when we follow God’s decrees and regulations.
Prayer:
3. How might I pray regarding Deuteronomy 3-4?
Dear Father in Heaven, thank You for guiding my life as You did the Israelites Moses led those forty years. Help me, Holy Spirit, not to let fear keep me from obeying God and doing whatever He directs. You are the one who ultimately gives me victory over my enemies whoever they are. I really desire to have the intimate relationship with You that Moses had. Please grant me the strength of character that he had to accept Your decision not to allow him to lead Your people into the promised land. Please guide me to the people You have chosen to lead the next generation. Please help me both to be a good role model and to train them well so that they are fully prepared to guide Your people. May our lives reflect Your glory just as Moses’ face did. Dear LORD God, please help Your people to “Listen up, pay attention, and obey” the decrees and regulations You have set before us in the Bible. Then we will have long and happy lives because we will be living as you designed us. Help us to learn from the mistakes of the past. Help us to choose and follow godly leaders, like Moses. Please assist us in displaying Your wisdom and knowledge to the people around us so that they will want to follow You, too. Please help us to remember Your instructions and pass them on to our children and grandchildren. Thank You that You are a merciful and compassionate God. Even when I (or we) mess up, You will not abandon or destroy those who trust You. You, LORD, are God both in heaven and on earth, and there is no other. To the best of my ability and with the help of the Holy Spirit, I will obey Your commands so that I may enjoy a good, long life on this earth. May You receive glory from my life. AMEN
Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)
4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Deuteronomy 3-4?
- I will take time to review how God has led me in the past and thank Him for it, especially for giving me victory over my enemies.
- I will confess to God and other people (when appropriate) when I have let fear keep me from obeying the LORD.
- I will look for ways to pass on my understanding of the laws and regulations Moses is teaching here to my own children, grandchildren, or other children that I know.
- I will “return to the LORD [our] God and listen to what He tells [us].” Then I will obey Him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength.
