Numbers 26-27

God Speaks

A Second Census; Taking Decisions to the LORD

Verse of the Day: [After the LORD told Moses he was about to die without entering the promised land,] “Moses said to the LORD, ‘May the LORD, the God who gives breath to all living things, appoint someone over this community to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD’s people will not be like sheep without a shepherd,'” (Numbers 27:15-17 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection:
Consider the following questions regarding Numbers 26-27:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Numbers 26

1. God knows who He can count on to fight for His cause of goodness; He will deal with dissenters.

2. All of God’s people 20 years of age and older are to be engaged in the fight against the forces of evil. Those who are younger should be in training to do so as well when they come of age.

Numbers 27

1. God is the One who ultimately chooses the leaders of His people.

2. People without a strong, godly leader go astray into sin and get in trouble like sheep without a shepherd.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Numbers 26-27?

O Sovereign LORD, Creator of the universe and everything in it, thank You for the way You know all about each of the people on this planet called earth. This includes me. You expect me to be engaged in the battle for righteousness in the power of Your Holy Spirit. He came to dwell in me the moment I accepted the fact that Jesus died to set me free from the death penalty for my sins and rose again so that I could live a new life in Him. I am now enlisted in Your army, O LORD of Hosts. I leave my old life behind, buried in the desert like that rebellious generation of Israelites You led out of bondage in Egypt. Count me in as a recruit in the army of Your warriors. LORD, raise up many in every “mountain of culture,” tongue, tribe, nation or ethnicity, and people group to join us.  Together we will fight for truth, righteousness, justice, freedom, and peace. We will ultimately win because, Jesus, You already have. Then we will forever bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Numbers 26-27? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will study the Bible and communicate with God daily so that I can know specifically how and where He wants to use me in the battle for righteousness,
  • I will enlist others in the fight as well. Together we will fight for the Kingdom of God to reign in individual lives and nations.
  • I will investigate who among the candidates for public office–local, state, and national–demonstrates that they will serve the people according to God’s direction and principles.
  • I will pray, encourage, support and vote for strong God-fearing leaders.
