God Speaks

Journey of the Israelites; Boundaries of Their Inheritance

Verse of the Day:  [May the LORD’s people destroy all the false gods and take possession of the land [all that] He has promised us. “Take possession of the land and settle in it, for I have given you the land to possess.” (Numbers 33: 53 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Numbers 33-34:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Numbers 33-34 [Since these two chapters are mainly lists of the names of places and people, they will be addressed as a unit.]

1. The LORD God is a God of order and organization as evidenced here in these lists–the list of the specific places the Israelites camped in the forty years after leaving Egypt, the list of boundaries of the promised land, and the list of tribal leaders.

2. People are to follow God’s instructions or face the consequences.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Numbers 33-34?

Dear Sovereign LORD, thank You for being a God of order and organization. Please help me to have more of that in my life. Although order and organization are important, our interactive love relationship is what You are after. Thank You for all the places I have lived, the jobs I have had, and the people I have known over the years of my life. Please help me to listen and carry out Your instructions so that I don’t have to face negative consequences. Guide me as You guided Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness. Help me to learn from the experiences of others such as the people in the Bible or those You put in my life. Then my life will bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Numbers 33-34? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will research maps for the wilderness wanderings and the boundaries of the promised land.
  • I will make lists of various places I have lived, various jobs I have had, and people who have influenced me. I will give God praise for how He has blessed me in every situation.
  • I will compare the geography of modern-day Israel with that of the places mentioned in these chapters.
  • I will pray for the people of the modern nation of Israel to obey God and to fulfill His plan for them.
