Verse of the Day: [Although it is the last verse in the book of Numbers, this verse summarizes the book of Deuteronomy.] “These are the commands and regulations the LORD gave through Moses to the Israelites [the generation of now adults that would enter the Promised Land] on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.” (Numbers 36:13 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Numbers 35-36:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Numbers 35

1. The LORD God is a God of justice who makes provision for the protection of those who unintentionally break his law regarding killing a human being.

2. People are to look to God for mercy and forgiveness whenever they break any of His laws.

Numbers 36

1. God watches out for people who are being mistreated, especially women and children who have no defender.

2. People can and should look to the LORD God whenever anyone is treating them unfairly, especially if others are violating His laws or regulations while the wronged parties are obeying them.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Numbers 35-36?

Dear Awesome Creator God, thank You for being both merciful and graciously forgiving while still holding people accountable for their actions. May people look to You whenever they are being mistreated, Show people what a great defender and rescuer You are. Draw people (including me) to participate in Your great rescue mission in whatever way You direct and enable them. May each of us display a piece of Your goodness. Help us, LORD, to work to bring our local spheres of influence under Your supervision. The result will be the spread of goodness, integrity, peace, and freedom. In all things and in all ways may we bring glory to the name of Jesus. AMEN

Action:(Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Numbers 35-36? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will join with other devoted Christ-followers to pray for my village, city, and/or county to exhibit God’s goodness.
  • I will work and vote for leaders who will judge, legislate, and execute for true justice to prevail in my village, city and/or county.
  • I will seek to help someone else secure their property rights.
  • I will look out for women and/or children who are being neglected or mistreated.
