Judges 6-7

God Speaks

God Calls and Uses Gideon to Lead the Israelites to Victory

Verse of the Day: “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, but if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us? Where are all His wonders that our ancestors told us about when they said, ‘Did not the LORD bring us up out of Eygpt?’ But now the LORD has abandoned us and given us into the hand of Midian.” The LORD turned to him and said, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?” (Judges 6:13-14 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection:
Consider the following questions regarding Judges 6-7:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Judges 6

1. God often chooses seemingly insignificant people (like Gideon) who will humbly obey Him in order to rescue His people.

2. People who consider themselves weak and insignificant can become mighty warriors for God if they will depend on the LORD as Gideon did.

Judges 7

1. When God’s chosen leaders are uncertain of the orders He has given them, God may reassure them, as He did Gideon by his secret visit to the enemy camp.

2. People should listen to and obey God’s instructions as Gideon did.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Judges 6-7?

O Almighty God, You wisely use oppressive enemies to discipline Your people when they disobey You. Remind us of what You have done for us in the past and help us to turn back to properly worshiping You. Turn multitudes into mighty warriors because You are with us and enabling us by Your Holy Spirit. Please once again use insignificant people, like Gideon, who will humbly obey You to rescue Your people. Even though these people may consider themselves weak and insignificant, equip them to become mighty warriors for You, LORD God. Cause us to depend on You, LORD, as Gideon did. When Your chosen leaders are uncertain of Your orders, please reassure them as You did Gideon. Help us to listen to and obey Your instructions as he did. Then people around the world will bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Judges 6-7? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will examine my life to see if there are any “idols” I have put in place of the LORD God.
  • I will tear down (get rid of) those idols and offer worship to the LORD God alone.
  • I will enlist the help of a fellow believer to gain reassurance as to what God wants me to do.
  • I will carry out the instructions God has given me even if it seems strange to me.
