Jeremiah 10-13

God Speaks

The LORD Pronounces Judgment on Israel, Judah and Jerusalem

Verse of the Day: Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings the darkness, before your feet stumble on the darkening hills. You hope for light, but He will turn it to utter darkness and change it to deep gloom. If you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride; my eyes will weep bitterly, overflowing with tears, because the LORD’s flock will be taken captive. (Jeremiah 13:16-17 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection:
Consider the following questions regarding Jeremiah 10-13:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Jeremiah 10

1. There is no one like the God of the Holy Bible.

2. People who worship anything or anyone other than the God of the Holy Bible are stupid and foolish. The objects they worship are merely made by skilled craftsmen out of wood, metal, stone, plastic, gemstones, or precious metals. No ideology or human being can save their eternal souls.

Jeremiah 11

1. God promises that if we will obey Him and do whatever He commands us, then we will be His people, and He will be our God.

2. In Bible times and now, people do not listen or even pay attention to God and His ways. Instead, we stubbornly follow our own evil desires.

Jeremiah 12

1. The LORD God always gives us justice when we bring our cases to Him.

2. Wicked people seem so prosperous, and evil people seem so happy. They think God doesn’t see what’s going on. In their minds He doesn’t exist.

Jeremiah 13

1. God weeps over the future of those who turn their backs on Him.

2. Wicked people refuse to listen to God or obey His commands. They stubbornly follow their own desires.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Jeremiah 10-13?

LORD, there is no one like You! For You are great, and Your name is full of power. Who would not fear You, King Jesus, O King of the nations? That title belongs to You alone! Among all the wise people of the earth and in all the kingdoms of the world, there is no one like You. You are the only one who can save my soul, Jesus. LORD God, You promise that if I will obey You and do whatever You command, then I will be Your adopted child, and You will be my Father God. Please forgive me for not listening to Your Holy Spirit’s whisper in my heart or even paying attention. Instead, I have stubbornly followed my own evil desires. LORD, You know my heart and everything about me. You see me and test my thoughts. Your name has been on my lips, but You know the times my heart has been far from You. Please set my feet back on the right path, following hard after Jesus. Open my eyes and those of my fellow believers to see what is ahead if we don’t repent and turn back to You. Forgive and redirect us so that we can bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Jeremiah 10-13? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will spend at least 10 minutes just reading back to the LORD (aloud) the names and characteristics of God I find in a concordance of the Bible or similar resource.
  • I will ask someone who says they don’t believe in or worship the God of the Bible to explain what they do believe in.
  • I will confess to God (and to other people as appropriate) when I have not listened or even paid attention to God and His words. Instead, I have stubbornly followed my own evil desires.
  • The next time someone asks me to pray for them, I will bring it to the LORD and prayerfully search the scriptures for His perspective.
