Genesis 25-26

God Speaks

Abraham’s Remarriage and Death; Isaac, His Life and Family

Verse of the Day:  [The LORD spoke with Isaac saying,] “I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your descendants I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham. I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.” (Genesis 26: 3-5 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Genesis 25-26

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

 Genesis 25

    1. God cares about the lives and deaths of His faithful people.

    2. When people have problems like death of a parent, barrenness of a spouse or conflicts among siblings, they shouuld pray to the LORD as Isaac Rebekah did.

Genesis 26

    1. God will bless succeeding generations, if they will be faithful to obey His commands, decrees and instructions.

    2. People need to obey God’s commands, decrees and instructions in their interactions with other people, but we don’t always.

Prayer

3. How might I pray regarding Genesis 25-26?

Dear Father God who takes note of the death of His chosen ones, may I live a good, long life that honors You as Abraham did. May I pray and think carefully about the heritage I am leaving for my descendants. Please help me to honor my parents (both physical and spiritual) and previous generations and leave a legacy of righteousness for future ones. Please help me to repair rifts with my relatives. Lord, please bring husbands and wives together seeking You. Answer their prayers, separately or together, in such a way that it builds their complete trust in You. Please give people promises from Your Word and Spirit that will result in Your Name being glorified. Forgive us, LORD, when we become so focused on the needs of this world that we disregard Your promises, blessings, and provision like Esau did, discounting his blessings and privileges as the firstborn. Please remind me of the promises You have made me in Your Word and help me to embrace them. Help me not to be ruled by fear, but to trust You and be honest and forthright with whomever I am interacting. For the glory of Your name, Jesus and Father God. AMEN

Action (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Genesis 25-26? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will initiate or update my last will and testament and leave a blessing or my descendants.
  • I will gather sayings or items I want to leave to my heirs or future generations. I especially want them to come to personally trust and obey Christ Jesus as their Savior and Lord.
  • I will daily seek the Lord on behalf of current and future generations.
  • I will consider how what I am saying and doing is affecting other people, and I will speak honestly and respectfully, especially to my elders and those in authority.
