Exodus 4-6

God Speaks

In the Midst of Bondage the LORD Promises Deliverance

Verse of the Day: [What The LORD God said to the Israelites in Egypt He says to anyone under any kind of bondage who will believe.] “Therefore, say to the Israelites: ‘I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.  Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And I will bring you to the land I swore with an uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.'” (Exodus 6:6-8 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection.

Consider the following questions regarding Exodus 4-6

> 1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

> 2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Exodus 4

    1. God will do what He has planned in spite of our reticence, resistance or excuses.

    2. People often resist or question when God calls them to do something “outside of their comfort zone.”

Exodus 5

    1. God sets things in motion, but the road to the fulfillment of His promises may be long and rocky.

    2. When people start to do as the LORD directs, circumstances may even get worse.

Exodus 6

    1. God continually reassures His faithful people of who He is and that He keeps His promises.

    2. People need to keep returning to the LORD as Moses did.

Prayer

> 3. How might I pray regarding Exodus 4-6?

O Great Promise-keeping God, help me to readily do as You say because I am remembering who You are and what You have done in the past. Expand my comfort zone by reminding that You are the God who created me, and You will enable me to do whatever You command. I see in the scriptures that You set things in motion, but the road to the fulfillment of Your promises may be long and rocky. Circumstances may even get worse. But, help me to keep trusting and obeying You. Please, Father God, continue to reassure us, Your faithful followers, of who You truly are and that You keep all of Your promises. We so need to keep returning to You, LORD, and to Your Son Jesus. It is only by relying on Your Spirit, who lives within all true believers, that we can bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

> 4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Exodus 4-6? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will set aside my reticence and do whatever the LORD is telling me to do.
  • I will determine within my heart to trust God even when things I’ve prayed about seem to be getting worse instead of better like I want.
  • I will bring the problems of myself, my family, my church, and my nation to the LORD and wait for His answers.
  • I will try to learn about and vote for leaders who will follow God’s plans and principles as they govern or lead, whether they know Him as their personal Savior and Lord or not. I will pray for all to do so.
