Exodus 13-15

God Speaks

Consecration, Miraculous Deliverance and Celebration

Verse of the Day: [Moses sang this song when God dramatically delivered the Israelites by opening Red Sea and then destroying the Egyptian Army.] “The LORD is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise Him, my father’s God, and I will exalt Him.” (Exodus 15:2)

We Respond

Reflection.

Consider the following questions regarding Exodus 13-15

> 1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

> 2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Exodus 13

    1. Because He created them and delivered them from slavery in Egypt, God had every right to command that the Israelites consecrate their first born males to Him and that they annually eliminate leaven from their homes and diets for seven days.

    2. People need physical reminders of what God has done for them.

Exodus 14

    1. In His time and in His way, God mightily delivers His people from bondage.

    2. People often regret their decisions as Pharoah did in regard to letting the Israelites leave Egypt.

Exodus 15

    1. The LORD is God, and He reigns for ever and ever.

    2. Although the Israelites were grateful for the miracle at the Red Sea, several days later they grumbled for lack of fresh water.

Prayer

> 3. How might I pray regarding Exodus 13-15?

Dear LORD God who leads Your people out of bondage and slavery, thank You for delivering and guiding everyone (including me) who will put their trust in You. Thank you for calling for the firstborn to be dedicated to You. Because Jesus, the firstborn of God, has redeemed me by faith, I receive all of the rights and privileges of the firstborn. Please help me to remember both what You did for the Israelites and what You have done for me. Please guide and protect me as clearly as You did the Israelites. Help me to prepare for and fight the battles of life in Your time, in Your way, and in Your strength. Help me to remember those who have gone before me and to learn from them. Confuse the enemies of Your people so that they fall into their own traps and fail. Please execute judgment on the wicked and bring glory to Your name. LORD God who rescues and sets free whoever trusts in Him, I can’t begin to thank You for all You have done for me. Thank You for conquering my three main enemies–the world, the flesh, and the devil. I will always thank You for that. I want to give You the credit always, not take it for myself.  Please display Your great power in such a way that multitudes of people put their faith in You and in Your faithful servants. I ask this in the mighty name of Jesus. AMEN

Action (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

> 4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Exodus 13-15?

With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will memorize Exodus 14:13-14 and/or 15:2 in whichever version I am most comfortable.
  • I will stand up to the wicked ones when I see someone being oppressed this week.
  • I will search the news for ways the LORD is bringing about justice and bringing glory to His name.
  • I will look for praise and worship songs or hymns that use some of the phrases in the song of victory in Exodus 15.
