Exodus 16-18

God Speaks

God Provides Food and Water for His People, Leads Them in Battle and Advises Their Leaders

Verse of the Day: “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow My instructions.’. . . The LORD said to Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.’ ” (Exodus 16:4, 11-12 NIV 2011)

We Respond

    Reflection

Consider the following questions regarding Exodus 16-18

> 1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

> 2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

    Exodus 16

    1. Father God is our ultimate provider.

    2. People tend to doubt God’s ability and/or willingness to provide for them.

    Exodus 17

    1. God provides both water and victory to obedient people.

    2. People need to quit quarreling and join together with God to fight against their true enemies.

    Exodus 18

    1. God puts wise people in the path of leaders.

    2. Leaders need to take heed of wise advice as Moses did from his father-in-law.

Prayer

> 3. How might I pray regarding Exodus 16-18?

Father God, You are our ultimate provider.  But we have to “gather” it–to recognize it, work for it, earn it, manage it, use it responsibly. We. even Your own people, tend to doubt Your ability and/or willingness to provide for us. LORD God, You provide food, shelter (including clothing) and water. And You will give us victory over all our enemies if we will trust and obey You. People (including myself) need to quit quarreling and join together with You, God, to fight against our true enemies–the world system, the flesh (our own sinful nature) and the devil. Help us to do so, Holy Spirit. LORD God, please put wise people in the path of leaders in each of the various realms of society. Then help these leaders to take heed of wise advice as Moses did from his father-in-law. That is the only way this world will change so that we will bring You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

> 4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Exodus 16-18? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will seek out advice and/or criticism from someone I know will give me an honest and helpful critique.
  • I will take a moment in prayer, monitor my response, and “consider the source” the next time I receive unsolicited advice or criticism.
  • I will call out to the LORD for help instead of complaining the next time I face a difficulty.
  • I will ask myself daily how I have trusted God in big or little issues, ordinary or unusual ways that day. Then I’ll thank Him for His assistance.
