King David Takes Action and Honors His Committments
Verse of the Day: [The LORD Himself was David’s ultimate resource. This same sentence appears 4 times in these three chapters.] The LORD gave David victory wherever he went. (2 Smuel 8:6, 14 and 1 Chronicles 18:6, 13 NIV 2011)

We Respond
Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding II Samuel 8-9 and I Chronicles 18:
1. What does this chapter tell me about God?
2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?
Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.
II Samuel 8
1. God is the one who made David victorious wherever he went.
2. People are blessed by God when they do as He directs.
II Samuel 9
1. The LORD God is kind and gentle with us for Jesus’ sake as King David was with Mephibosheth for Jonathan’s sake.
2. Just as Mephibosheth bowed in deep respect (and perhaps some fear) to King David who had the power of life or death over him, people should bow in worship, reverence, and awe before God.
I Chronicles 18
1. Just as He did with David, God will make us victorious, if we will trust and obey Him.
2. Those in positions of authority should reign as David did, doing what is just and right for all their people.
Prayer:
3. How might I pray regarding II Samuel 8-9 and I Chronicles 18?
Dear LORD God, I declare that You are the One who makes me victorious in the struggles in my life. I trust that You will reward me for all my honest efforts to do things Your way, either now or in eternity. Make me alert to the hurts and needs of others. May I reach out to them in the name of Jesus and in the Holy Spirit’s power. O LORD God, You have been so kind and gentle with me, even though I’ve often rebelled against You. I bow before You, LORD, in worship, reverence, and awe. May I (and all who belong to You) trust and obey You completely and seek to delight myself (ourselves) in You. May we do what is just and right for all people. I know that this will bring You glory, LORD. AMEN
Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)
4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to II Samuel 8-9 and I Chronicles 18? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:
- I will ask God to help me stand up and fight for what is right and against what is in opposition to God and His ways.
- I will help someone else for the sake of a friend.
- I will ask God to enable me to help someone today, even an enemy.
- I will volunteer to work with disabled people.
