1 Chronicles 26-29, Psalm 127

God Speaks

King David’s Final Assignments, Plans, Actions, Words and Death

Verse of the Day: David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. (1 Chronicles 28:20 NIV 2011)

We Respond

Reflection: A word of explanation: Gatekeepers had many very important duties. They not only guarded the gates on the four sides of the Temple, but they also maintained and guarded the utensils and supplies in the Temple warehouse. In other words, they were in charge of the treasuries of the house of the LORD. Some capable men were also appointed as judges and administrators over matters pertaining to God and the king in the territory east of the Jordan river.

Consider the following questions regarding I Chronicles 26-29 and Psalm 127:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

I Chronicles 26

1. God is sovereign over the men and women in positions of power and authority. He is aware of all that they are thinking and doing and will deal with them in His time and in His way.

2. People in positions of authority need to be physically, mentally, and spiritually capable of performing the tasks assigned to them.

I Chronicles 27

1. God knows each person’s strengths and weaknesses and where they should best serve.

2. It takes a lot of people to run a nation; each person has their own area of responsibility.

I Chronicles 28

1. God instructed David in all that was needed for the Temple just as He had Moses in regard to the Tabernacle, and David passed the plans and supplies on to Solomon who actually built it.

2. People need to heed the advice that David gave Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:8-10 and 20.

I Chronicles 29

1. God is worthy of all praise, honor, and glory just as David declared before the people in I Chronicles 29:10-13.

2. People are to serve the LORD with integrity of heart, obeying the LORD God’s commands, requirements, and decrees with wholehearted devotion.

Psalm 127

1. God is the One who ultimately builds up households, guards cities against intruders, and provides food for people.

2. People are to look at having children as a gift from the LORD.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding I Chronicles 26-29 and Psalm 127?

O LORD God, I agree with King David’s prayer recorded in I Chronicles 29:11-13 (NLT): “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on the earth is Yours, O LORD, and this is Your kingdom. We adore You as the One who is over all things. Wealth and honor come from You alone, for You rule over everything. Power and might are in Your hand, and at Your discretion people are made great and given strength. O our God, we thank You and praise Your glorious name!” Whenever needed, lead “we the people” to choose able men (and women) to handle the affairs of the government, business, education, the church, and society in general (locally, state-wide, or nationally). Help me, dear Holy Spirit, to obey the Father’s commands, requirements, and decrees with wholehearted devotion. LORD God, You are the One who ultimately builds up households, guards cities against intruders, and provides food for people. Your people are to look at having children as a gift from the LORD. Although I am not building a visible temple as Solomon did, I am building a life and a family that is meant to reflect Your glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to I Chronicles 26-29 and Psalm 127? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will pray for the “gatekeepers” in my city or community (those who are charged with keeping our possessions and treasuries safe and secure).
  • I will show respect and honor to police officers or those in the military by personally thanking them for their service.
  • I will seek to mentor a younger person so that they are equipped and supplied with what they need to carry on work that I have started.
  • I will commend a successor to the people I have been serving.
