God Speaks

Prophecies Against Ammon, Moab, Edom and Tyre

Verse of the Day: [Each of these prophecies contain the following refrain or variations of it:] Because you [gloated] over my sanctuary when it was devastated and over the land . . . and over the people of Judah . . . I will destroy you, and you will know that I am the LORD. (Ezekiel 25:3, 5, 7, 8, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17; 25: 2, 6, 14, 17, 21; 27:34-36 NIV 2011) [There are consequences for how one treats the LORD God, His sanctuary, His people or His land.]

We Respond

Reflection: Consider the following questions regarding Ezekiel 25-27:

1. What does this chapter tell me about God?

2. What does this chapter tell me about the human beings He created?

Here is one possible answer to each of these questions. Ask the Holy Spirit if there are any others for you personally to ponder.

Ezekiel 25

1. When the LORD God judges the nations, He will examine each of them as to how they responded to Him and treated His people.

2. People (and their cities) who do not respond to the LORD God or treat His people with respect will be utterly destroyed.

Ezekiel 26

1. God will deal severely with nations or cities (like Tyre) that come against Jerusalem, the special place He has chosen to bear His name.

2. People should not take advantage of others’ misfortune such as Tyre plotting to invade a weakened Jerusalem.

Ezekiel 27

1. In this chapter, God goes into great detail in describing the commercial activity of Tyre and how its destruction would devastate other nations. Commercialism had become their god.

2. People weep and mourn when great mercantile cities like Tyre are destroyed.

Prayer:

3. How might I pray regarding Ezekiel 25-27?

O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, thank You that You are my God, and I am Your adopted child. You do take note of how we respond to You and how we treat Your chosen people. Because of Your grace and my faith in what Jesus has done in His death and resurrection, I am one of them. Holy Spirit, please help me to treat other people with respect as if they were Jesus. LORD, please send Your Holy Spirit to convict those who are oppressing and harming Your people. Help them to see the wickedness of their sin, the wonder of Your righteousness, and the horror of the judgment to come. Help them to turn to Christ Jesus in faith and become an adopted child of Almighty God. Rescue also those who have made money, popularity, or power their god. Then may we all spend eternity bringing You glory, LORD. AMEN

Action: (Ask God, the Holy Spirit, if He wants you to work on one of the suggestions below or something else more personal that He points out.)

4. What action does the LORD want me to take in response to Ezekiel 25-27? With the help of God’s Holy Spirit:

  • I will work hard and earn money to support myself and my family, but I will ask the Holy Spirit to help me to avoid making work, money, or success a substitute for God.
  • I will strive to only weep and mourn over things of eternal value such as the Kingdom of God and the souls of people.
  • I will reach out to help someone in distress, not to take advantage of them.
  • I will search out how I can personally bless Jerusalem, Israel, or Jewish people, then do it.
